Time slipped
by early morning in Orange County, as few coffee shops are
open pre-dawn. By John Wayne airport, my best friend Jack
and I found coffee and a Maple scone at one of the only
open Coffee stores. We were casual about my arrival to the
airport not considering the padded security measures - which
were too obvious once I was dropped off and found my self
staring at a 300 yard line of people waiting for screening.
Doing the math in my head, I saw no way I would make my
flight from the end of this line, in the 30 minutes left
before my departure. What happened - we left a good hour
and a half before my flight?
Its not just
me - none of my artist friends wear a watch.
Security would
not let me in the front of the line and I had no other choice
but to get in the back of the line and accept the possibility
that I may have to be bumped to the next flight out. What
did I care ? I was on my way to the City I loved and I had
no schedule but to get there.
The line moved
incrementally, but it moved - I found myself at the security
with 5 minutes left before my flight. I stood there waiting
for my carry on and camera bag to come out of the x-ray
machine thinking I was going to make my flight after all.
That was before I found out where my gate was - it was at
the end of the South end of the terminal - I was in the
middle - I had maybe 3 minutes. It was at that moment of
discovery that I bolted to my left into the fullest sprint
that my luggage and full length black wool coat would allow.
I made it to
the gate with no time to spare - the door to the plane was
locked. For some reason however, the flight was being delayed
- I went through a body/ luggage search, and ended up in
my ticketed seat - last person on board - on my way to NY
to meet my lineage.
Already in flight,
I began to relax while reading Pictures & Tears, by
James Elkins - Creative ideas flow rapidly the further I
get from my life of survival - I have stepped into anticipated
revelation. This is where I live - in this great hope of
discovery and learning.
