What a show!
More on that
later - first - the day of the show - what a mess!
I got home from
setting up the lights (on the 27th/28th) at 3:30 AM and
went soundly to sleep - I awoke and went immediately to
fix the two paintings that had to be repainted. Still to
be finished, the last 20 items of the 7 page price list
- print out 200 of them/ collate and staple them - write
a show intro and a speech - ditch the trash at the show
and finish any remaining sales contract procedures, and
make a couple print outs for the FBA donations table - and
whatever else I seemed to have forgotten.
As it turned
out - it took too long to print the price sheets from my
printer (which included color images of all 52 works) so
I set out for Kinkos to run copies off my master. As it
turned out - all Kinko's stores in Laguna Beach had closed
and I ended up driving 30 minutes to another city - to find
out it would have cost me over $800 dollars to make color
copies - I switched to b&w and hung around for an hour.
Brad Davis showed up in the early afternoon with wall numbers
/ flowers / guest book / his easel. The banners for the
show arrived and we got those hung by about 5:30 pm. The
show CD's and the computers for running samples arrived
at 6. About the same time the tables were being set up with
the food and wine.
I, smelling
like a wet sheep, sweaty and grimy and unkempt, and at nerves
end - finally left to shower and get ready at a little after
6:30 - as people were arriving for the show! I waved at
them driving into the parking lot as I was driving out.
I wonder what they were thinking.
I almost fell
asleep in the shower - got dressed and arrived back to the
show by 7:45 - I was suppose to be giving a talk about the
work at 7:30 - I hadn't time to prepare a speech, though
I had wanted to. People were a bit aggravated that I was
not there when they arrived - as it was, between the entrance
and shaking hands and greeting people - my scheduled talk
didn't happen until 8:45, despite several guests that kept
pushing that I hurry with the speech. When I finally stood
up on a step ladder to absolute silence in the room (which
was rather nice) the speech - well -I just winged it -a
decade of teaching college had prepared me for that.
What I wanted
to say can be found at the Online Show site, here is a quick
link to "Seeing
the Show".
So the rest
of the night went well - I enjoyed talking with everyone,
and the reactions that the work evoked. I am looking forward
to more events as these in the future. About 60 or more
people attended while almost 80 others and there guests
did not show.
The show broke
even plus a month - enough to pay off the credit cards,
my back debt, and get a month ahead of my overhead. Not
enough money was raised for my Sabbatical, and that has
me a bit saddened. Something else will come up or I'll have
to adopt new plans.
As for the show
- the show space disbanded, the art packed away, the night
is over, but the show in spirit is just beginning. And that
is exciting.
There is good review online. Read it [HERE
